Happy New Year everybody.  I hope that the time off has been enjoyable and relaxing.  I know it has been a great break for me.  But a new year is upon us and amazingly we are only about 10 weeks away from our first practice of the spring season.

This is the time for New Year's Resolutions, mine rowing team resolution for this year is going to be to really recommit to this blog with a post at least once a week.

One of the things that I have really been trying to get the team to understand is the importance of goal setting.  We have tried various strategies to encourage this with varied success.  What I do know is that having a coach require somebody to write down goals as if it were an assignment at school really has minimal positive effect.  Which is why we haven't done that this season.  I know that last year, many athletes didn't even remember the goals that they wrote down at the beginning of winter training.  You can't achieve a goal that you don't recall!  This season when the request was voluntary, only a handful of individuals responded.

The following link is one that Caroline sent to me last year.

It does talk about the importance of goal setting with regard to achieving your maximum potential.  But goal setting is important in all aspects of our lives.  The article would work just as well titled "One important difference between good students and great students."
