Any high school student looking for a new competitive sport should consider rowing. The Indy Rowing juniors compete in eight and four oared racing shells in races in the Midwest. Our high school rowers have the opportunity to train and compete year round. We also welcome high school athletes who compete in other sports during the school year. The two competitive seasons, fall and spring, are similar to cross country and track in running - in the fall we race in longer (2 1/2 - 3 mile) races and the spring season we race 2000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles). In the winter, rowers not involved in another sport, train at Monon Fitness, the winter home of Indy Rowing.
Some Frequently Asked Questions.
Can a high school student join rowing without previous experience?
Absolutely, IRC Novice program focuses on learning how to row, and having fun doing it! Almost all rowers learn in high school.
I missed the March 3 meeting, can I still join?
Yes, the junior handbook in linked to the bottom of this page. It includes everything you need to know about IRC and the membership forms. Please check the calendar for dates and times, and email exec_dir@indyrowing.org to arrange a time to join the team.
Are there scholarships available?
Yes, please fill out the scholarship application and return it to Bernadette Teeley exec_dir@indyrowing.org
What equipment do I need to do this sport?
Nothing particular, just athletic wear and a water bottle (you do not even need special shoes!). You IRC dues cover the cost of the boats, oars and rowing equipment. Novice year, we provide the racing tank that you will compete in. You do need a pair of spandex black shorts (which can be purchased at any department store or retailer). Since the rowing seat is on rollers, it is important that whatever you wear is form fitting. Baggy clothing becomes entangled in the (slide) as the tracks and wheels are called. Many rowers choose to wear spandex tights, or fitted athletic pants/ shorts to practice. Any shirt will do, as long as it is tucked in or fitted to the body. There is a link to rowing specific clothing on the IRC Junior webpage.
What should I bring to practice?
Please dress appropriately for the weather. Additionally, it is a good idea in the spring to pack a change of clothes - that way if you get splashed during practice, you have something dry to wear home. You should also bring a filled water bottle.
